# Voices

> Rime's TTS voice catalog across Coda and Mist: voices in English, Arabic, French, German, Hindi, Italian, Japanese, Portuguese, and Spanish, and how to pick a starter voice.

Set `speaker` on every TTS request. For a first Coda request, try `astra`. For the complete, current lineup, use the live catalog endpoints.

```json theme={null}
{
  "speaker": "astra",
  "text": "Hello from Rime!",
  "modelId": "coda",
  "lang": "en"
}
```

## Starter voices to try

These speakers are confirmed to work on Rime's primary cloud models. All of them serve English.

| Speaker | Sounds like | Works on |
| :- | :- | :- |
| `astra` | Female, young adult, American Standard | Coda, Mist v3 |
| `luna` | Female, young adult, American | Coda, Mist v3 |
| `celeste` | Female, young adult, American | Coda |
| `masonry` | Male, middle-aged, Southern | Coda |
| `albion` | Male, young adult, English | Coda |
| `cove` | Female, young adult, African American | Mist v3 |

To compare voices, keep `text` the same and change only `speaker`. Use a line your application will actually say, such as an order update or an appointment reminder. A voice that suits a greeting may sound different reading a phone number, a date, or an address, so include those if your application speaks them.

## Browse every voice

The starter table above is a curated handful. These pages list every voice on Rime's two primary cloud models, grouped by language, with gender, age, and country for each.

<Columns cols={2}>
  <Card title="Coda voices" icon="microphone" href="/docs/voices-coda">
    287 voices across 9 languages. Rime's flagship model for most new applications.
  </Card>

  <Card title="Mist v3 voices" icon="bolt" href="/docs/voices-mist-v3">
    78 voices across 4 languages. The default when `modelId` is omitted.
  </Card>
</Columns>

For Mist v2 voices, use the [live catalog endpoints](/api-reference/data/voice-details), which list every voice on every model.

For the machine-readable source that these pages are generated from:

* Voice names by model and language: [`/data/voices/all-v2.json`](/api-reference/data/voices-v2)
* Demographics and other metadata: [`/data/voices/voice_details.json`](/api-reference/data/voice-details)

Both endpoints are public and update as voices ship, so they can list a voice before these pages do.

## Languages

Pass `lang` as a [BCP 47](https://www.rfc-editor.org/info/bcp47) language tag. Language support varies by model and deployment. As of August 2026, Rime's primary cloud models support the following languages:

| Language | `lang` | Coda | Mist v3 |
| :- | :- | :-: | :-: |
| Arabic | `ar` | ✅ | ❌ |
| English | `en` | ✅ | ✅ |
| French | `fr` | ✅ | ✅ |
| German | `de` | ✅ | ✅ |
| Hindi | `hi` | ✅ | ❌ |
| Italian | `it` | ✅ | ❌ |
| Japanese | `ja` | ✅ | ❌ |
| Portuguese | `pt` | ✅ | ❌ |
| Spanish | `es` | ✅ | ✅ |

Rime also accepts the 3-letter ISO 639-2 codes (`eng`, `ger`, `spa`) that older integrations send, and will keep accepting them. New code should send the tag in the table: only a tag can express a regional variant such as `es-MX`.

Mist v2 supports English, French, German, and Spanish. On-prem image coverage differs from the cloud matrix (see the [on-prem quickstart](/docs/on-prem/quickstart#tts-service)).

<Note>**A voice serves one language, so picking a language narrows your choices.** Coda covers nine languages, but no individual Coda voice crosses between them: 176 of its 287 voices are English, then Spanish 48, Portuguese 23, Japanese 13, German 9, French 8, Arabic 6, Hindi 2, and Italian 2. Set `lang` to the language of the voice you chose. An unsupported pairing may not return an error, so verify against the [Coda catalog](/docs/voices-coda) rather than assuming a familiar voice speaks your language.</Note>

`lawton` (Male, 60+) is a sixteenth featured Coda voice. It carries no style assignment in the catalog, so it does not appear in the tables above.

All voices above are confirmed to work with `modelId: coda`. The [voice-details endpoint](/api-reference/data/voice-details) contains the complete catalog, including non-English voices.

## Mist v3 voices

Mist v3 carries 78 voices with significantly lower TTFA than Mist v2. Most are drawn from the Mist v2 lineup, but the lineups are not identical: 71 speakers are shared, 67 Mist v2 speakers are not available on Mist v3, and 7 are Mist v3 only. Confirm a speaker before switching `modelId`.

See the [full voice list](/api-reference/data/voices-v2) for available Mist v3 speakers.

## Mist v2 voices

Mist v2 is tuned for clarity, pronunciation accuracy, and high-throughput production. For new projects, prefer Mist v3.

See the [full voice list](/api-reference/data/voices-v2) for available Mist v2 speakers.
