English’s written form, like many languages’, contains homographs. A homograph is a word that shares its written form with another word but differs in meaning, in pronunciation, or in both.

For Rime’s TTS API, only the pronunciation difference matters. For example, the words sow (verb, to plant seed) and sow (noun, a female pig) are spelled identically but pronounced differently. This poses a problem for any speech synthesis technology. Rime uses both contextual syntactic analysis and frequency information to predict which pronunciation is intended.

If Rime’s predicted pronunciation is wrong, you can override it:
